Vintage crewel curtain panels get a makeover

I’m so excited about my latest custom sewing commission: breathing new life into two pairs of vintage poplin curtains studded with crewel embroidery.

The curtain’s owner runs a historic B&B in Newburyport, and shares my love of finding vintage textiles at flea markets. When finished, they’ll hang in a corner room featuring a four-poster bed with a feather topper, chenille spread, and other period furnishings.

For this up-cycling project, I’ll be adding muslin lining, working on a way to camouflage the fade marks visible where the old hem was picked out, and adding a rod pocket casing and header.

Isn’t this fabric gorgeous? I love the fade marks and other signs of a life well lived.
