Several months ago I bought this old 4×6 rag rug at the Rowley Flea Market for $5.00. I love the funky random colors and the fact that it’s made from real rags from real clothes worn by real people.
Trouble is, the rug was a lumpy mess. Due to some overly jealous stitching by its maker, the coils didn’t lie flat. Although I hoped there would be a quick and easy remedy, the only option was to snip the threads in strategic spots, spread and reposition the braids, and stitch it all back together. (If you look closely, you can see that near the center there is still a bulge which has to be dealt with.)
Here’s what the rug looks like so far. It’s just basted in place for now. But at least most of the lumps are gone! Hopefully, this serves as my official observation of Lumpy Rug Day. With any luck, it will soon be lying flat and proud in our vestibule.
