New petite banner in progress

Autumn Grass – Cotton canvas 10″ x 10″

Cotton canvas is one of my favorite fabrics for creating small pieces of embroidered wall art. I like to call them “petite banners.” Due to their modest size and cost to make, they can be collected and displayed according to your mood, the season, or event.

The process begins with marking the canvas with water soluble pen. Next comes the embroidery – 10,000 or more stitches — to bring the fabric alive. After that, the canvas is hemmed (not glued) and the alignment marks dabbed away.

Some petite banners are finished with a rod pocket, a small natural wood dowel and waxed cotton for hanging. Others are designed with two flat wood strips inserted into back pockets. This approach lets the banner float on the wall without cords. The first approach is more casual, maybe even rustic; the second is more of an artsy presentation.

In the coming weeks I will be adding a number of petite banner designs to my studio shop. Petite banners are available in four standard sizes: 10×10″, 14×14″, 8×10″ and 12×14″. There will be many designs to choose from, and if you don’t see something that meets your need I can help find the ideal solution.
